EASY BOLOGNESE SAUCE

Ingredients
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 carrot, grated
- 1 yellow onion, diced
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 3/4 pound ground beef
- One 28-ounce can of crushed tomatoes in puree
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 1 dried bay leaf
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- Salt and white pepper
Instructions
- Heat the butter and oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the carrot and onion and sauté until tender, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and sauté 1 minute more. Add the ground beef and cook, stirring often, for 5 minutes.
- Add the tomatoes and their liquid, crushing them with the back of a large spoon. Stir in the milk, bay leaf, thyme, nutmeg, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Simmer the sauce for 20 minutes. Remove the bay leaf and taste to adjust the seasoning.
