Make your own Nutella, the chocolate-hazelnut spread that’s delicious on toast, on crepes, with a spoon, etc.! This recipe yields about 1 1/2 cups…if you refrain from eating it while making it.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole hazelnuts
  • 2 tablespoons canola oil
  • 2 tablespoons confectioners' sugar
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 12 ounces of good-quality milk chocolate, chopped and melted

Instructions

  1. To toast and peel the hazelnuts, heat the oven to 350ºF. Toast the hazelnuts in a single layer on a baking sheet for 15 minutes, shaking the pan once during baking to move the nuts around until they are golden brown and aromatic. Place them in a clean dish towel and rub the towel around the nuts to remove the skin. (You won't be able to remove everything, but that's ok.) Let the hazelnuts cool down before you grind them.
  2. Grind the hazelnuts well in a food processor to make a paste. Add the oil, sugar, cocoa powder, and vanilla and continue processing until smooth.
  3. Pour into a jar and let cool to thicken. (The spread will keep for about a month at room temperature).
